Is This the Spiciest Salsa in the World?

Is This the Spiciest Salsa in the World?

A restaurant in Albuquerque has created one measuring 12,000 Scoville units

Despite repeated warnings that spicy food could potentially kill you (OK, OK, so your body would shut down before it could), spice fanatics everywhere can't seem to get enough of the latest trend — Trinidad's Moruga Scorpion pepper.

Albuquerque restaurant El Pinto has worked on bottling what they deem the spiciest salsa in the world, made with Trinidad Scorpion peppers (the same kind, CNN reports, that are used in pepper spray).

The pepper itself can reach up to 2 million Scoville units, while El Pinto's Scorpion Salsa is diluted to 12,000 Scoville units (note: a jalapeño reaches 4,000 Scoville units).

There's been some video buzz about the spicy salsa, which will be served at the National Fiery Foods & BBQ Show in Albuquerque, N.M., although none of them quite as entertaining as the NPR reporter trying a 1.5 million Scoville pepper. Watch below.

This is the hottest salsa you can make with the world's hottest pepper, the wicked Carolina Reaper! Of course, if you like to taste your salsa, you can also add less of the reaper to this recipe. We like to add some, then add more after tasting until we get it just right. Remember, it can also get hotter overnight! We like to make a big batch of this salsa and refrigerate it for snacking on anytime with chips or on tacos, but don't worry, it won't last long! It's addictive stuff.

1 Large (28oz) can Organic Whole Tomatoes
or 2 cups of Fresh Tomatoes

1/2 Cup - Fresh Cilantro leaves (use as much as you'd like)

Small slice of a Carolina Reaper

1/2 Tsp of Dried Reapers or Carolina Reaper Powder
(more if you dare!) Note: You can also use ANY peppers for this recipe ( Jalapenos , Santa Fe Grande Peppers , Cayenne Peppers , Habanero Peppers , Thai Hot Peppers , Red Cherry Hot Peppers , Ghost Peppers , Trinidad Scorpion Peppers , you name it!)

1/2 Onion (diced, soak in cold water 20+ minutes to sweeten)
1-2 Garlic Cloves
Fresh Lime Juice (1 lime)
1 Teaspoon of Sugar
Teaspoon of Cumin & Chile Powder to your taste
Salt & Pepper

Process everything (excluding onions) in a food processor.
Add onions at end and blend for just a second so the onions stay chunky.
Put in the fridge for an hour+ for flavors & spice to develop.

We used a small dried piece of Carolina Reaper
for our recipe, it doesn't take much!

Grow Carolina Reaper for your next batch of salsa:

This salsa is also great with the Yellow version of the Carolina Reaper!
Have you grown the new Yellow Carolina Reaper ? This Yellow Reaper is a natural variant of the famous red Carolina Reaper. It is beautiful with its bright yellow skin, that is smoother and thicker than its cousin - but just as hot!

*All Hot Peppers Work in this Recipe!
You can use any hot pepper or super hot peppers in this recipe, anything from Jalapeños to Ghost Peppers. Add as much (or as little) of the peppers as desired for heat. We like to add a little bit of the super hots (like the Reaper), and then add a little more if it's not hot enough. Note, often this salsa gets hotter after refrigeration overnight.

Salsa Tasting Party Idea:
It would be fun to make three salsas using this recipe but using three (or more) different hot peppers for each salsa, and then have a salsa tasting party! :) It's amazing how fruity the Carolina Reaper can be, a very different heat and flavor than if you used Jalapeño! It's fun to really taste the different flavors of super hot peppers in salsas, the tomato, lime, cilantro and onion really bring out the flavors that you can taste in addition to feeling!
